Barley research in the Northern Region was consolidated in June 2006. At that time, Barley Breeding Australia (BBA) was formed. BBA is a joint venture national breeding program which replaced the six state-based, public barley breeding programs. The BBA national breeding program operates through three nodes: Warwick (Hermitage Research Station), Adelaide and Perth. The node at Hermitage Research Station currently services the Northern Region.
Grain grower levies contribute to the 'BBA - Northern Node' through GRDC project DAQ00110.
The future of barley breeding and research across Australia is currently being considered. A review of BBA has been completed and the joint venture partners (including GRDC) are deciding how to proceed. The future of barley breeding and research in the Northern Region is uncertain, since the Northern Region presents quite different issues and options to those in the Southern and Western Regions. The Northern Region grains RACs have put together a representative committee to consider this issue and make representations to the joint venture parties and the BBA Advisory Board, as required.
Barley Breeding Australia’s Three Year Review has been completed and the Review Report was delivered to the BBA Advisory Board at the end of January, 2009. The Review Report has been the subject of consideration by the Advisory Board and the BBA joint venture partners.
The BBA Advisory Board has agreed to consult with the barley industry, and to that end the Board has made public the Review Team’s Executive Summary, Recommendations, and the Advisory Board’s initial response to those recommendations. The full Review Report will not be made public.
The Executive Summary is available on the BBA website.
The BBA Advisory Board has invited interested parties to respond to the Executive Summary and Recommendations. The Board will accept comments up until they meet in early September 2009. Comments should be directed to the BBA Coordinator, Mr. Mike Perry. Mike's contact details can be found on the BBA website.
